Play Excerpt: Speak
Many years ago, I was involved with WordPlay, a collective of writers, actors, and directors, in the Wexford Arts Centre in the Southeast of Ireland where I live. Based on feedback from a staged reading of a full-length play ‘Broken’, I was encouraged to develop what I had originally thought was a minor character into a one-woman show.
My short play entitled ‘Speak’, based on my lived experience, is about a mother of a nonverbal child with autism and it follows her daily trials and triumphs. It was longlisted for the 2019 Billy Roche International Short Play Award and shortlisted for Scripts Ireland award the same year.
Here is a monologue performed by Elizabeth Rose-Browne on South East Radio on 08 March 2016 for International Women’s Day. It also featured in an ensemble show entitled “Be Inspired” in Fusion Café Wexford in April 2016. I hope you like it.
