Sumizuri-e Japanese Woodblock Printmaking Workshop

Just back from a two-day workshop in Japanese woodblock with print artist Hiroko Imada at the Chester Beatty Library.

Over the weekend, we focussed on sumizuri-e printing, in which a single printing block is used with black ink to create a monochrome image.

I’ve cut lino, acetate, copper and MDF plates before so I was looking forward to diong something new.

We designed, carved, and printed from our own printing block and also learned a little about registration techniques to ensure the correct positioning of the paper through the use of the uchi-kento registration mark.

Here’s a little video of my work in progress over the weekend. Lovely bunch of people and had more than a few giggles with Patrick who sat next to me for the duration.
